PHYSIOTHERAPY FAQs

Do I need a referral?

01

No. You can book an appointment with our physiotherapists without a referral. A referral may be required if you are accessing physiotherapy through a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan, Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA), Workers Compensation or Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance claim. If you're unsure whether a referral is needed, our reception team is here to answer any questions before you book.

Can I claim physiotherapy through my private health fund?

02

Yes. Physiotherapy is covered by most private health funds where your level of extras cover includes physiotherapy. Bodyfocus offers HICAPS, allowing eligible claims to be processed at the time of your appointment. If you're unsure of your level of cover, we recommend checking with your health fund before your appointment.

What happens during my first physiotherapy appointment?

03

Your first appointment begins with a discussion about your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle and goals. Your physiotherapist will then complete a thorough assessment, which may include examining your movement, strength, flexibility and other factors relevant to your condition. Following the assessment, your physiotherapist will explain their findings, discuss your diagnosis and recommend an individualised treatment plan. In most cases, treatment will begin during your first appointment and may include hands-on therapy, exercise prescription, education or advice to support your recovery.

Can physiotherapy help with back and neck pain?

04

Yes. Physiotherapy can help manage many causes of back and neck pain, including muscle and joint injuries, disc-related conditions, sciatica, postural problems and persistent pain. Treatment is tailored to your individual needs and may include hands-on therapy, exercise, movement retraining and education to improve function, reduce pain and help prevent future problems

Do you treat sports injuries?

05

Yes. Our physiotherapists assess and treat a wide range of sporting and recreational injuries affecting people of all ages and activity levels. Whether your injury occurred during organised sport, at the gym or while exercising recreationally, treatment focuses on supporting recovery, restoring function and helping you return to your chosen activities safely and confidently.

Can physiotherapy help after surgery?

06

Yes. Physiotherapy is commonly recommended following orthopaedic surgery to support recovery, restore movement and rebuild strength. Your rehabilitation program will be tailored to your procedure, your surgeon's recommendations and your individual goals, with treatment progressing at a pace appropriate for your stage of recovery.

Can physiotherapy help with vertigo?

07

Physiotherapy can assist with certain types of vertigo, particularly those arising from the inner ear, such as Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). Your physiotherapist will first determine whether physiotherapy is appropriate for your symptoms. If your dizziness is caused by another condition, they will discuss the most appropriate management or referral pathway.

Do you treat workplace and motor vehicle accident injuries?

08

Yes. We provide physiotherapy for people recovering from workplace injuries and motor vehicle accidents, including those covered under the NSW Workers Compensation and Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance schemes. Our physiotherapists work closely with your GP, insurer, employer and other healthcare providers where appropriate to support your recovery and help you return to work and everyday activities.

Can I access physiotherapy through Medicare?

09

Medicare may provide a rebate for physiotherapy if you have been referred by your GP under a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan and meet the eligibility requirements. Your GP can advise whether you are eligible for a CDM plan. Our reception team can also answer any questions you may have about using your referral when booking an appointment.

How many physiotherapy appointments will I need?

10

The number of appointments required varies depending on your condition, its severity, your general health and your treatment goals. Some conditions improve within a few appointments, while others require a longer course of rehabilitation to achieve the best possible outcome. Your physiotherapist will discuss your recommended treatment plan after your assessment and review your progress as treatment continues.

What should I wear to my appointment?

11

Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely and provides access to the area being assessed or treated. For example, shorts may be helpful for lower limb injuries, while a singlet or loose-fitting shirt can be useful for shoulder or upper back conditions. If you're unsure what to wear, comfortable everyday clothing is usually suitable.
