REMEDIAL MASSAGE FAQs

Do i need a referral?

01

No. You can book an appointment with a remedial massage therapist without a referral. A referral may be required if you are accessing massage therapy through the Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA), Workers Compensation or Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance claim. If you're unsure whether a referral is needed, our reception team is here to answer any questions before you book.

Can I claim remedial massage through my private health fund?

02

Yes. Remedial massage is covered by most private health funds where your level of extras cover includes remedial massage. Bodyfocus offers HICAPS, allowing eligible claims to be processed at the time of your appointment. If you're unsure of your level of cover, we recommend checking with your health fund before your appointment.

What happens during my first remedial massage appointment?

03

Your first appointment begins with a brief discussion about your symptoms, relevant medical history and treatment goals. Your therapist will then assess the area requiring treatment before commencing your remedial massage. Treatment is tailored to your individual needs and comfort throughout the appointment. Where appropriate, your therapist may also provide advice on stretching, self-management or other strategies to help support your recovery between appointments.

What is remedial massage?

04

Remedial massage is a targeted form of massage therapy that focuses on assessing and treating muscles, tendons, ligaments and other soft tissues that may be contributing to pain, stiffness or reduced movement. Treatment is tailored to your individual needs and may be used to assist with recovery from injury, improve mobility, reduce muscle tension and support physical function.

What conditions can remedial massage help with?

05

Remedial massage may assist with a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions affecting muscles and soft tissues. Common reasons people seek treatment include muscle tension, neck and back pain, headaches, sporting injuries, postural discomfort, overuse injuries and general stiffness. Your therapist will tailor treatment to your individual condition, symptoms and goals.

Will remedial massage be painful?

06

Not necessarily. While some areas of treatment may feel tender or uncomfortable, remedial massage should remain within a level that you feel comfortable with. Your therapist will discuss the treatment approach with you and adjust pressure throughout the appointment based on your comfort and the goals of treatment.

Do you provide sports massage?

07

Yes. Remedial massage can be beneficial for people participating in sport at all levels, from recreational exercise through to competitive athletes. Sports massage may be used to support training, assist recovery following competition, address muscle tightness, improve movement and help manage injuries as part of a broader rehabilitation program.

Do you offer pregnancy massage?

08

Yes. Pregnancy massage can help relieve many of the muscular aches and pains that commonly occur during pregnancy. Treatment is tailored to your stage of pregnancy, comfort and individual needs, with positioning and techniques modified to ensure both comfort and safety throughout your appointment.

Can remedial massage be combined with physiotherapy or exercise physiology?

09

Yes. Remedial massage is often used alongside physiotherapy and exercise physiology as part of an individualised treatment plan. Where appropriate, our practitioners work together to provide coordinated care, helping to reduce muscle tension, improve movement and support your overall rehabilitation and recovery.

Can I claim remedial massage through Medicare?

10

No. Medicare rebates are not available for remedial massage therapy. If you have private health insurance with extras cover that includes remedial massage, you may be able to claim a rebate through your health fund. Our reception team can answer any questions you may have before your appointment.

What should I wear to my appointment?

11

Wear comfortable clothing that is easy to change in and out of if required. Depending on the area being treated, your therapist may ask you to remove some clothing while ensuring appropriate draping is used to maintain your privacy and comfort at all times. If you're unsure what to wear, comfortable everyday clothing is usually suitable.

How often should I have a remedial massage?

12

The frequency of treatment depends on your condition, symptoms and individual goals. Some people benefit from a short course of treatment while recovering from an injury, while others choose occasional maintenance appointments to help manage ongoing muscle tension or support their physical activity. Your therapist will discuss an appropriate treatment plan based on your individual needs.
